Review of The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) by Kyle S — 28 Dec 2015
The Grand Budapest Hotel is unconventional in its execution, and that is why it works so well. The nonsense feels unnecessary, but if it were not there everything else would have fallen out of place. It is the most imaginative and innovative form of obscurity that I have seen this year, and I did not expect any less from our beloved Wes Anderson.
Though what makes this movie so successful is the underlying message that holds strong throughout the entire film, and the best way to explain this is with a quote from the movie itself, "To be frank, I think his world had vanished long before he ever entered it, but I will say: He certainly sustained the illusion with a marvellous grace.
" When put simply, this movie is about a man with a deep emotional connection to the world and its inhabitants, and how he uses both wit and will to prove that despite living in a harrowing time he can gracefully demonstrate the best parts of humanity.
