Review of The Graduate (1967) by Tony's F — 28 May 2011
The Graduate is a comedy from 1967 which launched the career of one of the best living Actor's (Dustin Hoffman). This film is one of the original romantic comedys, and it is a movie worth seeing if you are a fan of these type's of flicks or if you are a fan of (Dustin Hoffman).
(Dustin Hoffman) plays a 21 year old called Ben. Ben has just got home from a "Rich-parents" college and has a degree, but he does not know what he wants to do with his life. His Parents and family seem to care more about his future than he does, this annoys him alot. Ben is a shy and a lonely 21 year old virgin, he doesnt talk to any girls and he does not seem to have any friends. The night of his graduation dinner, one of his parents long time friends "Mrs's Robinson" who is married, asks Ben to drive her home. Ben drives her home and "Mrs Robinson" tells him to come in for a drink, but she wants more than just a drink. Long story short, Ben and Mrs Robinson start having an affair, they will meet every night at this hotel and get it on like donkey kong!.
That part of the movie was funny and good, you know a 21 year old guy having sex with his parents long time friends, good s**t. After that tho the movie becomes pritty dull and not believable, ill tell you why. After Ben meeting up with Mrs Robinson every night, he than gets told that Mrs Robinsons daughter "Elaine" is coming back home to live with her mother. So Ben's parents tell him that he should ask her out on a date, so thats what he does but "Mrs Robinson" gets jelous and tells Ben that he can not see her daughter and if he does than she will cause trouble. Long story short again, Ben takes "Elaine" out on one date, and it would of only been a about a 4 hour date, you know the whole dinner thing and a movie. The only problem with this tho is apparently Ben and Elaine automatically fall in love just after having one date, and now Ben wants to marry her. Well where im from having one date with a chick does not make you want to marry her, and there's no way that you can just randomly fall in love. But this is what occurs in this movie, I think its ludacris.
This might be "SPOILERS", but its the only way I can talk about the film. There is a scene in this film just after their first date when Ben is pritty much forced to tell Elanie the truth about the affair with her Mum. Just before he tells her I said to myself, "Well, the outcome shouldnt be that painful because they have only been on one date", But!!!. It was very painful, Elainie cried her heart out and could not stand all the pain, so she left and went back to college. Long story short again and again, Ben told his Parents, "Im going to Marry Elaine, even if she hates me". So from that point on in the film you have your typical rom-com. Chase the girl that left, and Marry her even tho there is no chemistry. And yeah thats exactly what happens. Btw Elanie also is getting married to someone else at the time, what an odd set up.
(Dustin Hoffman) acts really fine in this movie, just think of Mc'Lovin from "Superbad" or the main character in "American Pie", and thats what reminds Me of (Dustin Hoffman's) performance in this movie. Tho unfortunately his performance does not save the day. I take all genre's seriously, so that means if im watching an action flick than I take the plot seriously, same as a horror film im not only wanting to jump out of my seat, im also wanting to see a good story and belivable acting, same with a Comedy it has to be realistic unless we are talking about "Monty Pythons" or spoof flicks and thats a different story. "The Graduate" has an ending like most Rom-coms you see today, but just remember this is one of the first films like this, but that dosent mean the movie is that good or the relationship between the characters are believable or you care about them.
Still since this film delivers now and than, fresh from me.
