Review of The Graduate (1967) by Rob L — 02 Jul 2012
A reputed classic that I had somehow never gotten around to seeing and there is indeed much to enjoy - in particular, it's curiously fascinating to see the California of the sixties depicted on the cusp between eras - some people looking like they have teleported in from the 1950s, others leaning towards the counter culture.
Hoffman, all 4 foot 6 of him, is never a convincing romantic lead, although his performance is superb. The movie is criticized for Katharine Ross's role and it is indeed baffling how Hoffman suddenly turns to her, but it' a comedy and the director didn't really need to explain himself.
