Review of The Gorgeous Hussy (1936) by Lee Anne W — 29 May 2010
Joan plays a sort of 1820's Pamela Harriman, a Washington D.C. woman whose power and opinions rattle the people around her. Lionel "Old Man Potter" Barrymore plays her friend and mentor Andrew Jackson, Melvyn Douglas is the jerk she loves, Robert Taylor and Franchot Tone the nice guys she marries.
Her costumes are beautiful, and actually make occasional attempts to be period accurate. Joan herself looks like a china doll. Jimmy Stewart appears (and looks completely ridiculous) briefly. I prefer a "modern" Joan.
