Review of The Goonies (1985) by K-Lin C — 19 Apr 2012
Before the Black Pearl, there was the Inferno. Before Captain Jack Sparrow, there was One-Eyed Willy. And before the Pirates of the Caribbean, there were -- the GOONIES!
"Heeeeey yooouuuuu guuu-uuys!".
Why is this my most favorite movie of all? Perhaps because it was my first favorite. Perhaps because it makes me think of my brothers. Perhaps because it's one of the most quotable movies I know of. Perhaps because I can watch it over and over and over again and never get tired of it. Perhaps because if I'm having a bad day, I can turn to this movie, and it never fails in making me feel better. Whatever the reason, this is a great, classic movie.
What draws me to this movie is the adventure, and the friendship. I've always been a fan of adventure stories, and stories of friendship. The bond between this group of friends is unbeatable; the chemistry between them is fantastic -- realistic and funny. Each character is entirely unique. And absolutely nothing beats Mikey's admiration for One-Eyed Willy.
The storyline is simple and believable. I've always loved the fact that Mikey has a bunch of old pirate junk in his attic -- including the treasure map! There's a crazy surprise around every corner! The script is flawless and hillarious, and the characters are superbly crafted. I'm a huge fan of strong characters in a story, and these guys are excellent.
It's a movie about dreams coming true, the unimaginable happening, good winning over evil, and the true strength of friendship. It's a good laugh, and just can't be missed!
