Review of The Goonies (1985) by Leonard E — 13 May 2015
This will be an unpopular opinion, but I watched Goonies for the first time, and was not impressed. I expect more from this all-star cast and the production company behind Star Wars and Indiana Jones. It probably would have been OK without 5-10 minutes of shout-filled, barely understandable dialogue.
I can see why a kid would like this - these kids are so cool with their gadgets, taking on the bad guys, swearing like sailors. But there's no heart (besides Sean Astin's second-best tear-filled monologue - see also Two Towers).
Next time I have the choice, I'm skipping this to watch Short Circuit (filmed in the same house) or the much better kid-adventure 'Honey, I Shrunk the Kids' (similar movie without the swearing and plot holes).
Grade C.
