An epic Western melodrama that seems more epic by focusing so narrowly on, primarily, two characters and their dance of dominance. In the same way, Leone uses grand vistas and intense closeups, desolate solitude and crowded battlefields to develop the scope and impact of the movie.
A succession of masterfully composed scenes accompanied by an iconic score immerse us in a world where mercenary considerations trump loyalty at nearly every turn. Even for "the good.".
