Review of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) by Brandon E — 04 Aug 2014
First of all I despise westerns, they were always boring to me. Most of the westerns have a 'campy' feel to them. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly does not have that campy feel to it but it has charisma.
I do not like Westerns but I Love the Good, The Bad and the ugly. Watching this film is filmmaking at it's best. Sergio Leone and the music of Ennio Moriconne have created a film that will forever be remembered and respected by those who have watched this film.
This film also influenced many filmmakers today. I remeber watching this for the first time and kept thinking about Quentin Tarintino. The pacing of the story, the characters, even the music is evident in his films.
This movies represent all western movies for me. Clint, Eli and Lee potrayed characters that are today respected like mythological gods. This film will never be out dated, and no one should ever remake this.
The story of three guys in the search for a buried cashbox in an unmarked grave. In the movie the three men must work together in some way to get to the money. The catch is that the three men distrust each other as one man always tries to outshine the other in order to get the money.
The men must work together due to their knowledge of the location of the buried treasure. This last scene is the best, I love Morricone's Ecstasy of Gold. It should be remembered as one of the greatest scenes in film history.
The performances are top notch, Clint is at the top of his game as the unnamed man. Eli Wallach, truly represents the ugly as the bandit who always screws over those he work with in order to keep the money for himself.
The chemistry between Eli and Clint is great, two men who distrust each other in order to get to the prize. But who steals the show is the bad, Lee Van Cleef is the ultimate bad-ass, the opening sequences clearly shows that his character is dangerous and un-predicting.
Lee's performance as 'Angel Eyes' has truly influenced many villians. once again YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LIKE WESTERNS IN ORDER TO WATCH THIS. Enjoy this film. This last scene is the best, I love Morricone's Ecstasy of Gold.
