Review of The Good Lie (2013) by Tony L — 03 Jan 2015
The trailer for this movie leads viewers to believe this is a comedy starring Reese Withersoon as the guide to three fish-out-of-water Somali refugees. Not so. This is a film with far more serious intentions, and promoting it as a Reese Witherspoon vehicle is simply the filmmaker's way of attracting viewers.
Doing so is a "good lie." This is a low-key, unpretentious film that features some sparkling performances by unknown actors, a suitably understated performance by Witherspoon. Despite the dramatic liberties director Philippe Falardeau and writer Margaret Nagle have taken this is a compelling tale about a serious topic -- the African refugee situation.
