Review of The Good German (2006) by Brogan W — 08 May 2008
This has to be the most unthrilling, thriller I have ever watched. I can usually watch films, good and bad, and get some sort of point from it, an education of sorts. However, 'The Good German' left wanting the hour and 38 minutes of my life back.
The only merit of this film for which I have creditied it with a star is its portrayal of the time. The costume, sets and music all bring firmly set this stroy in war torn Berlin, even if a few of the digital mattes are awful.
I'd love to give you a synopsis of the story however, i'm not entirely convinced there was one. We didn't care about any of the characters, there were vast gaps in the story, unexplained histories and relationships. In fact, it seemed as if they had found some great archive footage of the Potsdam conference in which Truman, Stalin and Churchill attended post war to divide Berlin and made a modern film around the footage. The contrast was so high that it glared and washed out the frame, very nuance was overbaked and the action and direction seemed nothing more than egotisitc indulgence.
After recently enjoying 'Good night and Good Luck' this was a 'very boring, bland and uneventful German' indeed!
