Review of The Good German (2006) by Loay O — 22 May 2008
Filmed in black and white, The Good German is set in post-war Berlin, where an American military journalist (there to cover the Potsdam conference ) is drawn into a murder investigation which involves his former mistress and his driver.
Soderburgh's effort makes one wonder if this is homage or pastiche? I reckon it's too old fashioned for today's audience. The climactic sequences are well executed, but the film continues on for too long after that.
The acting in this film is nothing special, either. Overall the film starts out with an interesting aim but in the end comes over as a load of pretentious and tedious twaddle, trying to capture (or steal) the magic from a movie style long gone.
It could have been a tense war time thriller â?? but the story is just not interesting nor thrilling enough. Classic film noir will want nothing to do with this, it might have style but there is no substance whatsoever.
