Review of The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973) by David S — 16 Apr 2009
The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1974) -- [4.5] -- These movies ride on the charisma of their leading man. After a perfectly acceptable Kerwin Mathews in "The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad", the famed sailor was played by driftwood.
In this movie, we have John Philip Law, driftwood that can't maintain an accent. The whole movie suffers from this poor casting, but it's also a very slow-paced movie, with all the action coming in rapid succession during the last half hour.
I think my favorite part of the movie were the tiny winged critters. They were evil, but they had more character than Sinbad, so I was pulling for them. Ray Harryhausen's effects are noticeably more polished (the compositing is more seemless), but special effects in a boring, uncharismatic movie aren't really all that special, are they?
