Review of The Gold Rush (1925) by Brian C — 20 Apr 2009
This film is my vote for the funniest film of all time. Never have I ever laughed as hard at a film. Also, this is a film where the cheap tape versions are better. The Two-Disc DVD features the 1942 narrated version of the film, which omits the fantastic final shot and has Chaplin narrating the whole thing, and a "restored" silent version, which is played at a normal speed, thereby cutting out a lot of the humor.
Silent films were originally played a bit fast, and that's what makes them more humorous. Anyway, in this film, The Little Tramp is caught up in the Alaskan gold rush of the late 1800s. This film features the classic segments of the boiled boot and the dance of the dinner rolls.
