Review of The Godfather Part II (1974) by Kali K — 30 May 2013
Where The Godfather falls short, Part ll fills in the pieces...if not better than the first. "What? You liked Part ll better??" Yes, I did. It feels more complete as a film. Judging solely by its run time, I previously (and mistakenly) felt that there was no way a 3 hour and 20 minute film could be perfectly paced - I could not have been more wrong.
Poor pacing can ruin even the most otherwise perfect movie. It is a frequent and increasingly common flaw in about 90% of the films I view. However, when the credits rolled for Part ll, it became suddenly clear to me that every scene, dialogue, and nuance was completely necessary for the overall message and impact of the film.
The saga that is The Godfather legacy became whole in my mind. Coppola masterfully crafted and impeccably exploited every detail, including Al Pacino's and Robert De Niro's remarkable acting abilities.
I finally understand the praise that these films have been receiving for 40 years. I can honestly and without reserve state that this is one of the first times I may consider the sequel better than the original.
If you have not seen Part ll (or Part l), I implore you to take a Sunday and watch these epic, timeless classics. You will absolutely not regret it.
