Review of The Glenn Miller Story (1954) by Susan S — 17 Aug 2010
Easily dismissed by our generations after WWII, this is a well done, heart felt depiction of the times that Miller lived in. Who would ask a 2 year old torch love to meet him for a date? Miller did. Who would have a gal (that was a year into her engagement) call from New York to have her marry him the next day no less, when she had to go from Denver? Miller did.
This movie has it all, and NO violence. NO swearing. No vices whatsoever, except staying up late for music in clubs.
HOW refreshing is that?
I totally dismissed this film, though I like Stewart. Who wants to rehash that old Goodman, Benny and Miller stuff. Well, as a member of the Beatles generation, I thought it means studying the people that those folks built upon, intentionally or not.
Miller could not get a break in his time when he started. No one wanted his arrangements. No one wanted to hear that "bum" band the Beatles. See a trend? Anyone who is a pioneer is going to get the arrows.
And so it goes. Get the movie from your library free. Rent it. Either way, take a trip down memory lane and enjoy a film era that we sorely miss.
