Review of The Gleaners and I (2000) by Nate A — 30 Nov 2007
Varda's charming documentary demonstrates the connections between a centuries-old practice of gleaning in the fields and urban forms of 'gleaning'. The film movingly depicts the plight of the impoverished who have to salvage society's refuse in order to survive.
She also points out how art has often used gleaning in order to create artworks. Also, the people she interviews are characters (a wine-grower/psychotherapist whose wife was analysed by Lacan, for instance).
