Review of The Gleaners and I (2000) by Ethan Y — 03 Mar 2008
A very interesting and educating documentary. Varda manages to somehow bring honor to the idea of sifting through other people's garbage. In this aspect The Gleaners and I is fascinating. The amount that we as a society waste is impressive.
This would be all well and good if it wasn't for the fact that Varda likes to cut these fascinating bits with her own silly, faux artistic ramblings. No Miss Varda, the audience does not care about how long it takes for a truck to pass your van, we don't care that you left your camera turned on on accident, and we don't want to watch a lens cap 'dance" for three minutes. Lastly, we don't give a damn about your hand. I can't remember the last time I heard something so pretentious I rolled my eyes and wanted to beat my head against a table.
