Review of The Giver (2014) by Cassandra L — 23 Sep 2014
Personally I came into film without even knowing that the book existed.
While the plot does seem interesting enough, even with the wealth of dystopia future stories that are written including the famous Logan's Run and Hunger Games. The film does not explore these elements to more of a depth. Leaving the audience that has not read the book confused as to why this would come about. Hanging ideas like flowers on the wind. Pretty to look at yet pretty much forgotten not long after it left that scene. Leaving an impression that the plot pulls out a plot hole to save the main character. Overall, just badly executed and wasting a lot of potential.
The stylistic choices are certainly baffling. The lack of colour within the film nearly made me wonder whether the projector was working correctly! I could say that it takes science and pour measures of "The rule of cool" on it. Personally, I would say the whole grey look projected, wasn't well received as envisioned.
Overall, this film did only one good thing. I am going to try and find the original source only to try and fill in the gaps that the film failed to explore.
