Review of The Girlfriend Experience (2009) by Aaron R — 25 Jul 2009

Soderbergh truly is a world-class filmmaker. The film looks great and the story is expertly written. Also, perhaps the biggest surprise is that a good performance was given by an adult film actress. Sasha Grey manages to nail a lot of subtle beats that you typically only see in performances from top-quality actresses. I'm not sure if what she has could transcend and make her a real film actress (let's face it, her role isn't the biggest stretch in the world), but I think it would be interesting to see her give it a try.

I love all the references to the economy and the film is very layered thematically. Soderbergh also made a great movie by leaving sex completely out of the movie and instead focusing on character (there is some lmiited nudity, but for a movie about high-priced escorts starring a pornstar, I think at least a little is to be expected). I find it hilarious and incredibly impressive that this movie is written by the same guys who wrote Ocean's 13. These guys are apparently very talented, and I gotta keep my eye out for whatever they do next.
