Review of The Girlfriend Experience (2009) by Lester Y — 01 Oct 2009

I thought Sasha Grey (someone whose, uh, material I never really enjoyed) was good for the movie. Not only for the sake of authenticity, but her deliberately empty performance fits like a glove.

At times the movie seems to be too wrapped up in its own arty-ness that it's a chore to even take it seriously, and emotionally and in terms of the narrative, very disconnected. Aesthetically though, it's very minimalist and pleasant, and while I thought the execution was lacking, capturing the at-odds, intersecting double-life of a high-end escort is an interesting concept.
