It's certainly a gamble for critically-acclaimed filmmaker like Steven Soderbergh risks on picking porn star Sasha Grey in her first mainstream acting role. After flirting with big-budget features, it's good thing to see Soderbergh back on his experimental, low-budget quickie and THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE seems like a potential comeback to his groundbreaking 1989's SEX, LIES AND VIDEOTAPE.
Despite given a measly budget (shot at $1.7 million), the film is surprisingly blessed with first-rate production values, with stylistic approach from an overall technical credits. Grey is a striking screen presence, but her lackluster acting skills are pretty much evident.
Being a central character, she is too stiff for most parts and thus making this supposedly scant 77-minutes moviegoing experience seems like a weary slog equivalent of a snail's pace. And given the provocative subject matter about.
