Review of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (1997) by Grégory S — 05 Jul 2009
This movie surprised me seeing as how I HATE most chickflicks (which don't be fooled this movie absolutely is). This move though, avoids the major pitfalls that most other chickflicks jump into headlong.
The characters are interesting, the relationships are believable, and the ending is realistic (for a movie based on time travel). There are a few questions left unanswered, but I think it was done intentionally to allow the viewer to decide what happens after the credits roll, but not in the crappy "The Lady and the Tiger" co-out kind of way.
This movie definitely has a solid ending, but leaves a lot open to interpretation as well. The animation is great, the music is perfect upbeat but bittersweet when it needs to be, and, surprisingly, the English voice acting is phenomenal.
I would go to so as to say this is the best English voice over for a Japanese film I've ever scene. The actors manage to express all the little emotions their characters are feeling and you can hear them working through things as they speak.
In closing, I was pleasantly surprised by this movie and plan to watch it again to try and figure out some questions left by the ending,.
