As derivative as it is, "Girl Next Door" is enjoyable in a way few of today's sex comedies are. This can be attributed to its multidimensional characters, and the refreshing absence of a one-track-mind focus on sex at its most puerile.

Matthew Kidman (Emile Hirsch) is a good kid. He's straitlaced, academic, and honest to a fault. However, when Danielle (Elisha Cuthbert) moves in next door, his white-bread world is turned upside-down. After Matthew discovers Danielle - who has become his girlfriend - was a former adult video star, things get even more complicated for a kid used to handling problems no more complex than writing a winning speech for a scholarship to Georgetown.

It's fun watching actors chiefly known for their dramatic work - Hirsch, Paul Dano, and Timothy Olyphant, who's hilarious as the alternately menacing and goofy antagonist - in comedic roles before they were famous.
