Review of The Gift (2000) by Benjamin N — 25 Oct 2007
The lead acting is rather irritating, especially Blanchett, and the basic premise is unoriginal - pretty standard low-key thriller stuff.
But... what this film does so damn well is *atmosphere*. The soundtrack is gloriously, shudderingly creepy, full of open fifths on sweeping strings that summon the bleak, bleak feel of a redneck funeral.
Additionally, the minor characters have nice little detailed Deep South touches about them that add to the overall vibe.
