Review of The Gift (2000) by Mustan D — 09 Oct 2009
Great supernatural thriller. The probably wasn't Raimi's intention, but I liked the dramatic scenes much more than the supernatural or scary ones.
The movie as a whole actually works much better a drama than a horror or suspense film.
You can definitely see the Raimi touch all through this movie. Very Raimi-ish shots and sequences that actually kept reminding me of his latest, Drag Me To Hell.
The actings all excellent. Even Keanu Reeves, worst actor of all time, was pretty good.
No one comes close to Giovanni Ribisi though. He gives the best performance, his scenes.
The most intense ones in the movie. I can't figure out why this guy doesn't get more work than.
He does. He's a very underrated actor.
The plot does get a little formulaic towards the end, which is too bad, Raimi could have thought up something a little more inventive for the ending, but I still really enjoyed it.
I loved seeing J.K. Simmons in a small role. That guy's the bomb to watch.
