One of the most romantic films I've seen takes a plot that could have been contrived in the modern day: a ghost and living soul fall in love but can't be together, and though while in the present we would find a way to overcome the premise and provide the happiest and rosiest ending possible, this film ends happily but in a much more believable and even tragic way.
