Review of The Getaway (1972) by Jim V — 12 Jun 2007
I know I should prefer some of Peckinpah's better rated, or more controversial films, but this is the one I just love. The story itself is formulaic and very, very, very dull - I mean the robbery is probably one of the least interesting I've seen, but when it shines this film SHINES.
The scene of McQueen jumping in the river to celebrate his freedom - magical. The destruction of the car by shotgun - seminal and Woo never beat it. McQueen thrown to the ground by McGraw's jerking the car away - revealing and a stunning little beat.
Just a tight, great action movie. I'd give it 5 stars, and it is a favorite of mine, but the misogyny on display here is Peckinpah at his most unpleasant and mars what could have been a masterpiece.
