Review of The Getaway (1972) by Jake A — 19 Aug 2012
Sam Peckinpah directs this adaptation of Jim Thompson's novel and creates a dark and violent film for the 1970s. Steve McQueen stars as Doc McCoy, a convicted who sends his wife Carol (Ali MacGraw) on a mission to find him a way to get out of prison.
She does by finding him a job to rob a bank with dirty politician Jack Benyon (Ben Johnson) financially supporting them. When the job doesn't go as smoothly as they would hope, Doc and Carol go on the run towards Mexico with the money.
They are pursued by Rudy (Al Lettieri), one of their accomplices who was left for dead after he tried to kill the couple and take all the money for themselves. They are also being pursued by Benyon's organization led by his brother.
The film moves at a tension building pace with the characters not trusting anyone. McQueen is charismatic as always and his chemistry with MacGraw is good. The film is fairly dark especially when it comes to Rudy kidnapping a couple to help him drive in search of McCoy.
the film though is a fun film to watch and another great McQueen film.
