Review of The Getaway (1972) by Xgary X — 27 Sep 2010
A Sam Peckinpaw gem. Action drama that starts in prison and ends..... well you'll have to see it. Ben Johnson ruins this film for me. He is THE worst actor allowed anywhere near a camera. Thankfully he gets lost in the first half of the film.
Bank heist goes terribly wrong for McQueen and beautiful Ali McGraw (Love Story). [ The pair in reality got married for a brief time.] A very serious flaw in the film, or in reality for that matter, is that McQueen shows his face to everyone in the film, hastening his capture. The guy is a born loser.
The opening scenes of deer in the prison yard was very cryptic to me. Not one or two, but dozens. I suggest you watch this for the film history it presents. The soundtrack is awful, very typical of its time. By now this is an average heist film, but in its day it was way above average.
Film buffs today must realize that these films built what they see today. To critizise them as being boring or just average shows how incredibly uneducated they are in the history of cinema.
You can't go round comparing today's thriller films to what came before. Your favorite films will be history as well someday and just as boring.
