Review of The Garbage Pail Kids Movie (1987) by Andrew N — 29 Sep 2010
I was ten when this movie came to the theaters. I was there in the front row, loving it. When the credits rolled, my next door neighbor and I shook our butts in the aisles to whatever song was playing; we were happy to finally see our favorite collector's cards animated into moving, breathing characters on the screen.
My Garbage Pail Kids cards were a prized possession back then, so much that I still have them in one of my mother's closets, along with various New Kids on the Block memorabilia. But watching again last night, 23-years later, wow, what a disgusting, strange and terrible movie!
Outside of the context of collector's cards, 80's fashion and snot and vomit shots being the shiny gems of slapstick, it's a wonder how they found people tiny enough to wear the zitty foam costumes of angry, flatulating Cabbage Patch Kids. It's also a wonder how this movie got made at all. However, seeing that I was interested in much bizarre stuff as a child--sure as hell explains a lot now.
