Stylish and unorthodox, this is film that was in a way, ahead of its time. Michael Douglas gets placed in a real life video game by his brother as an attempt to bring him back to the real world, in which he hasn't been living for some time now.

An ingenious approach to say the least but one still that can or could have used some work. Clunky storytelling gives away the secrets too early and direct, and most of the rush Nicholas Van Orton gets from watching his whole life fall to pieces is a bit watered down because well we know it isn't real.

When he tries to "break" the game then the story gets even more clumsy and while the point is marvelous the execution gets stuck in the mud. Fincher directs almost flawlessly as usual, and Michael Douglas is really good as Nicholas, but one can't help but feel, how this film would have looked without the burden too much explanation? This films holds your hand, a little too much, as most of today's games do as well, it's time to give the audience/players a bit more freedom.
