Review of The Fury (1978) by Timothy S — 04 Apr 2010
Brian DePalma's follow-up to "Carrie" is very similar in a lot of way except for quality. He is a masterful director who has made some of the best suspense movies in recent history, but he was clearly slumming with this plodding movie that is light on horror and heavy on paranoia and unanswered questions. It's surprisingly subdued and short on style, but very heavy on plot and more dialogue than special effects.
It's obvious from the distinguished names in the cast, the studio wanted this to be taken seriously, but all that is canceled out when inexperienced Amy Irving gets more screen time than Kirk Douglas. Still, Douglas is vearly havingmuch more fun than you will watching this, and John Cassavetes makes a great villain. He also blows up real good in a scene that rivals anything in "Scanners".
It starts out with some promise, but I never got into the story. Luckily, DePalma's career rebounded and he made some of the best films of his career following this dud.
