Review of The Fundamentals of Caring (2016) by Mike S — 08 Jan 2017
This buddy-road trip movie is frequently funny and sometimes quite touching. Paul Rudd is as watchable as ever as Ben, a newly-trained caregiver whose first client is a snarky teenager with Muscular Dystrophy named Trevor.
They bond through insults and bawdy banter. Eventually, they concoct a plan to get Trevor out of the house by going on a road trip to visit some roadside attractions such as the world's biggest cow and the world's deepest pit.
They pick up some lost souls along the way (a young woman looking start a new life in Denver and a 38-weeks-pregnant woman trying to reach her mother in Nebraska before her due date). Practical jokes are played, snappy dialogue is performed, and personal growth is achieved.
And that pit really is deep.
