Review of The Full Monty (1997) by Mark B — 15 Feb 2010
It seems as though there is a preponderance of British films that delight in showing off their countryâ??s downtrodden. That heightens our enjoyment, I suppose, when the protagonists prevail. That's certainly the case with The Full Monty, where we get to watch a group of middle aged men rise, shall we say, to the occasion, providing a jolt to the cumulative pride of their community, and adding a little cash to their wallets. But the real story is not what they did, but how they did it.
Their genius idea, as you probably know, is to put on a male strip show, culminated by "the full Monty." That is, everything goes.
The buildup requires some patience, as we learn a little about the less than ideal economic situations of our soon to be heroes. And most of them have some serious relationship issues they are dealing with as well. But each of these characters is thoroughly interesting and likable, so it's a fruitful ride we go on towards an end that, about midway, you know is inevitable. And that's what keeps you watching.
What makes this film special in the end is, well, the end. A raucous, feel good finale is expertly executed. Given the material, or lack thereof, ahem, what more would you expect? And The Full Monty certainly delivers.
