Review of The Fugitive Kind (1960) by Todd E — 04 Jul 2010
Juke joint perfomer "Snakeskin" (Brando) Xavier drifts into a small town looking for work, inadvertently touching off a powder keg of sexual frustration, bitterness, prejudice and revenge. Tennessee Williams' drama may be too florid for some, but Lumet's taut, spare direction keeps things from spinning out of control (until such time as it needs to).
The cast is uniformly strong, with Magnani and Brando being the natural standouts.
