Review of The Fugitive (1993) by Danny R — 01 Oct 2015
Andrew Davis's riveting crackajack thriller which is based on the classic 60s television series of the same name. It tells the story of Dr. Richard Kimble, a well-respected Chicago surgeon, played brilliantly by Harrison Ford who delivers a bravura performance.
He returns home one night to find his beloved wife murdered by a one-armed man who flees after a brief struggle with him. Kimble is wrongly convicted of his wife's murder and sentenced to death. But on route to prison he escapes during a collision between his prison bus and a freight train, an astounding sequence that is as physically striking as it is amazing, the sight of Kimble fleeing for his life while a massive locomotive bears down on him is unforgettable.
Kimble escapes but now must evade the obsessive pursuit of a cunning U.S. Marshal named Samuel Gerard, played by Tommy Lee Jones in a powerhouse scene-stealing performance that rightly earned him the Academy Award & Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Kimble must find a way to prove his innocence, he'll have to go back to Chicago and begin to put the pieces together. The story now goes into high-gear as a cat-and-mouse game between the man unjustly accused of his wife's murder, and the relentless no-nonsense law officer who is tracking him down with a merciless ferocity.
It is the duel between these two strong personalities, Ford and Jones that makes this thriller work so well. Pure filmmaking on a grand scale, thanks to Davis's flawless direction, and a top-notch supporting cast that includes Sela Ward, Julianne Moore, Joe Pantoliano, Andreas Katsulas, and Jeroen Krabbe.
The kinetic action sequences and chase scenes are suspenseful and memorable. One of the best thrillers of the decade. Nominated for an Best Picture Academy Award. Highly Recommended.
