Probably my favorite Peter Jackson directed movie, "The Frighteners" was his first big-budget Hollywood financed movie. It's an equal balance of silly and disturbing, not really a conventional horror film, and not exactly a comedy either.
And somehow that was the reason for it's box office failure.... but shouldn't that be the fun of it? Watching something different than the rest? I'll never understand people.... alive or dead.
