Review of The Frighteners (1996) by Renzo V — 04 Nov 2014
"MICHAEL J. FOX, GHOSTHUNTER".
- 'The Frighteners' is a 1996 horror comedy directed by Peter Jackson (the Lord of the Rings saga, Brain Dead) and co-written by his wife Fran Walsh. A very good film, in the tradition of 'Poltergeist'. An absolute must-see, because of the well-balanced dose of humor and horror, the amazing effects and of course the impressive cast. Starring Michael J. Fox (Back to the Future Trilogy), Trini Alvarado (Paulie, Little Children), Peter Dobson (Forrest Gump, Drowning Mona), Dee Wallace (Cujo, E.T.), Jake Busey (Starship Troopers, Identity), Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator, House on Haunted Hill), Chi McBride (Gone in 60 Seconds, I, Robot), John Astin (The Addams Family tv-series, Killer Tomatoes) and R. Lee Ermey (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Full Metal Jacket). Get ready to get spooked!
After visiting the house of mentally ill Patricia Ann Bradley (Wallace) and her mother, doctor Lucy Lynskey (Alvarado) gets obsessed with the story of Patricia's former boyfriend: the mass murderer Johnny Charles Bartlett (Busey). Lucy's husband Ray (Dobson) has other issues as a paranormal Frank Bannister (Fox) drove through the yard fence. When Ray and Lucy experience paranormal activity in their house, they are forced to call in Frank. Unknowingly to them, Frank has three ghost who help him earn money: 50's nerd Stuart (Combs), 70's gangster Cyrus (McBride) and Wild west Judge (Astin). During his 'exorcism' of the Lynskey home, he notices a number on Ray's forehead. Shortly after that, Ray dies and comes to Frank for aid to contact his wife.
When Frank and Lucy meet each other at a restaurant to talk about Ray, Frank witnesses how a man who has a number on his forehead gets killed by the Grim Reaper. Can the psychic prevent others from dying?
