Review of The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981) by Gabe S — 30 Jun 2007
Based on a Victorian romance novel with a notoriously open-ended conclusion. The author gave readers three different endings to the story, so screenwriter Harold Pinter (yep) takes an interesting tack and retains that same ambiguity in a neatly meta- way.
In addition to the traditional story, there's a concurrent story that follows the two protagonists (Irons and Streep, both great) as actors on the set of the movie version OF the original Victorian story.
While the period romance sticks pretty close to form, the present day actors-in-tragic-love parallel really makes things interesting, especially as the two plots collide and become inextricably entwined in the last twenty minutes or so.
A really unique work.
