Review of The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981) by Nate W — 04 Sep 2009
"The French Lieutenant's Woman" is really two films in one: a period romance interjected with scenes of the love affair between two actors playing the leads in said period romance. This clever device invented by writer Harold Pinter in adapting John Fowles' unwieldy novel adds a welcome dimension to what could have been a run-of-the-mill BBC movie of the week.
Jeremy Irons and Meryl Streep are excellent, both in restraint and in the throws of passion. 19th century England is magnificently recreated in all its grimy glory by production designer Assheton Gorton and costume designer Tom Rand.
