Review of The French Connection (1971) by Kelly B — 04 Apr 2009
It's rare that I give five stars for a film, but this is a "perfect" movie! Winning Oscars for all 5 top spots of 1971, and for damn good reason!! It broke the mold for cop dramas, with Billy Friedkin's gritty, doco-drama style and amazing to the point editing.
It also features an amazingly underrated score from master, Don Ellis. The man actually invented trumpets with quarter octaves to give an other-worldly sound to pieces of the score! All this combined with the ferocity of Gene Hackman's incredible performance of Detective Popeye Doyle stopping at nothing to get his man, with extreme consequences.
Also features the best chase scene in a film, since "Bullitt" . I often repeat myself, about 1970's film-making being the best decade for directors to strike new ground with their craft.
"The French Connection" is no exception, and remains one of the best films ever made.
