Review of The French Connection (1971) by Mereie D — 08 Sep 2009
Arguably the best crime flic ever made in the seventies. Singing its praises almost feels like kicking in an already open door (as the Dutch would say). If you have never seen this one, you haven't seen movies at all.
It sets off brilliantly even before we've seen any actual images: the musical score is terrific, and will stay so throughout the entire movie. It is amazing to see that a plot which is quite basic and predictable (the first and perhaps only unexpected twist is the attempted hit on Doyle) can result in such a fascinating film.
Great images, very realistic impression of grim, dangerous New York at the time (with a criminal on every street corner, it seems), lifelike dialogue, the works. Some scenes could have been much shorter, but much of the effect would have gone lost then.
A must-see for every (aspiring) film lover.
