Review of The French Connection (1971) by Phil S — 18 Mar 2010
Great crime movie, some fantastic possibly ahead of its time documentary style, a lot of very well done shaky cam and what looks like steadycam first person shots. Although a lot of the dialogue is difficult to follow, it makes sense, essentially boiling down to a series of foot, and a cracking car chase.
The ending is really abrupt but kind of appropriate. Hackman is really believable, and you can see parallels to his drunk Popeye in a lot of more recent cop dramas. Saw some bits of The Wire in there, and how many tributes there were in Grand Theft Auto 4! Good watch.
