Review of The French Connection (1971) by Bernard K — 11 Apr 2010
It may not be all that it is cracked up to be, but it is still a very good film. The films interesting plot and great acting by its leads shows both sides of the law in a film that goes against the hollywood norm of good guys win and bad guys lose.
Popeye doyle starts out as a likeable hero but shows his darker side when he goes against what his job stands for to catch a cunning french drug runner. It shows how some detectives get so caught up in catching a criminal, that they start to break the laws they swore to enforce.
Popeye is a great character in that he is an antihero, and uses any and all means to reach his goal. His overzealous behavior ends up killing an FBI agent, who Popeye believed to be his target. It was groundbreaking in that it left out a theme that had been ruining movies for years, a happy ending.
