Review of The French Connection (1971) by Jonathan A — 11 Sep 2010
Rough New York cop goes after French heroin traffickers making a huge deal in the city. Based on a true story. Gritty, impressively-made crime-thriller that boasts one of the greatest chase scenes ever filmed.
Dated, for sure, but that's because there will never be any other movie like it these days that so definitively captures the look and feel of the 70s in Pre-Giuliani New York. Add to that a great performance by Gene Hackman, tight editing and script, along with a suave, jazzy score.
My only nitpick would probably be that it's one of those movies that's so good, you don't realize it until it's over. But with such an appropriately anticlimactic ending, I don't see how the director could've gone any other way.
