Review of The French Connection (1971) by Jason R — 13 Jun 2011
A definitive installment in the cop film genre. Gritty, fast and at times comic, this was a notable precursor that paved the way for a decade of great action films that made their way to classic status.
Friedkin's sharp direction and phenomenal performance chemistry between Hackman and Scheider give this film the ultimate buddy cop duo. We are also shown one of the greatest car chases in cinema. This is a picture that eventually influenced popular films such as Ronin, the Bourne Trilogy and the Lethal Weapon series.
It deserves to be viewed by anyone who appreciates and smart action film that breaks the mold of just relying on entertaining action sequences and a loud hail of gunfire. Not to be missed.
