Review of The French Connection (1971) by Niccolò N — 05 Oct 2015
A genre defining action film by discontinous but talented William Friedkin, which is actually my personal favourite. The director nails everything here : from a great screenplay by Ernest Tidyman based on a real investigation run by New York detectives Eddie Egan and Sonny Grosso, to a fast-paced, tight, perfect editing by Jerry Greenberg. Hackman is incredible here : he doesn't like the role but look at him questioning a suspect in the first ten minutes. Roy Scheider is also very good, and Fernando Rey is pure Bunuelian, European class. Every action director of the last 44 years, maybe with the expection of some younger contemporary filmaker, owes something to this film.
And now let me ask you : have you ever been to Poughkeepsie ?
