Review of The French Connection (1971) by Aaron C — 16 Jan 2010
Best picture of 1971? I believe it. What William Friedkin has given us here is a classic hard nosed cop story. Now, I love Roy Scheider, and there was a lot of great work done here but I have to be honest and say Hackman is the whole damn movie.
See, when he's not saying something or on screen at all you find your interest dips a little. The man simply earned his oscar through and through. He's got great chemistry with Scheider and whoever else he's forced to work with and completely hard core when it comes to perps.
Some detractors might say the plot could use some livening up. I don't see where. The French Connection, perhaps more than any other crime drama, is real. Especially that car crash in the middle of Popeye Doyle's amazing El chase.
It was very real. No doubt about it, this is one classic that deserves all the credit it's got.
