Review of The Fox and the Hound (1981) by Manny M — 07 Feb 2011
One of the Disney animation studio's best features between the time of Walt Disney's death and the studio's Renaissance period (beginning in 1984). In some ways, it recalls the animation style of the golden age.
Worthwhile messages about friendship and prejudice, everlasting bonds, the pain of letting go, and seasonal changes echo "Bambi" somewhat, yet appear fresh and well-done. Marked a "passing of the boton" onto new animators at the time, such as Glen Keane, John Musker and Ron Clements.
The latter two would go on to co-direct "The Great Mouse Detective" and eventually "The Little Mermaid" and "Aladdin," films that Keane helped animate as well. A wonderful (and sometimes intense) film.
