Review of The Fourth Kind (2009) by Niaz M — 27 Feb 2011
Real footage or not, it doesn't matter. This movie was an interesting new twist on alien abduction and I enjoyed it. Treat it like "Blair Witch" and just go with it.
I have to admit my bias: I love Milla Jovovich and I see almost everything she's in. Yes, I know 80% of her movies are crap, but I still love her. And this film is not one of the 80% of crap--it's really well done. Using the archival footage to frame the narrative was quite effective. It reminded me of "Fire in the Sky" but Osunsanmi made sure not to repeat the error of showing the aliens. In this case what is not seen is infinitely more frightening than any prop an FX artist could design.
I don't know a whole lot about alien abduction theories, but my husband has read a great deal on the issue and told me that the stories corroborate other supposed abductees' stories, especially the owl and the cinnamon smell. This movie didn't make a believer out of me, but it did make me wonder where that strange bruise on my wrist came from.
